The head of the government assures that the accusations are a discredit campaign. In Madrid, people came to the rally in support of the government official.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said he will not resign amid corruption allegations against his wife. He announced this on Monday, April 29, after several days of deliberation, reports the Spanish publication El Mundo.

According to him, he will remain at the head of the government, despite the "persecution campaign" of his wife, Begoña Gomez.

He said that he had received messages in support of him. This is what prompted him to remain at the head of the government.

For the last five days, the leader of the socialists was absent from life.

Supporters of his Spanish Socialist Workers' Party called on Sánchez to stay. Thousands of people came from all over Spain to rally in Madrid on Saturday to support Sanchez.

Sánchez denies the allegations against his wife, Begoña Gómez, and says they are part of a long campaign to smear him and his family by political opponents.

It is unclear at this time whether Gomez will be officially named as a suspect in the closed investigation, which is still in its early stages. The investigation is being conducted following a complaint by the Manos Limpias (Clean Hands) trade union, known for its lawsuits against the government.

Earlier, Pedro Sánchez said that he was refusing to perform his duties for a few days.
