by .The agreement between Russia and Japan on cooperation in the field of elimination of nuclear weapons (NW), which is subject to reduction in Russia, has ceased to be in effect. This is stated in a document on the portal of legal acts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia.
"On May 21, 2024, the agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of Japan on cooperation to promote the elimination of nuclear weapons, subject to reduction in the Russian Federation, and the creation of a committee for cooperation for this purpose, signed in Tokyo on October 13, 1993, was terminated." it is stated in the document of the department.
The Russian-Japanese Treaty on Cooperation in the Field of Nuclear Weapons Elimination was signed on October 13, 1993 and entered into force on the same day.
Earlier, Dmytro Streltsov, the head of the Department of Oriental Studies of the Moscow Institute of Foreign Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, commented on the termination of the agreement, saying that relations between Tokyo and Moscow are at their lowest point in post-war history. At the same time, the expert noted that Japan does not pose a military threat to Russia.
