by .On May 29, in Rome, Antonio Tajani, Italy's Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, will meet with the foreign ministers of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
The meeting confirms Italy's growing interest in Central Asia, a region of increasing political and economic importance. The meeting will be attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Murat Nurtleu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Bakhtiyor Saidov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Sirojiddin Muhriddin, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan Jeenbek Kulubayev and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashit Meredov.
The conference will include three working sessions and a plenary session, where discussions are expected to focus on the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR). This project aims to accelerate trade between Europe and the Far East through Central Asia. The European Union has pledged to invest 10 billion euros (US$10.8 billion) to support the project.
Since its inception in 2017, TITR has become a vital trade route. Cargo traffic is expected to reach 11 million tons by 2030, which will require investment in infrastructure, particularly in the Caspian Sea ports.
During the visit of Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Rome in January, he highlighted the TITR initiative as a great opportunity for Italian companies. Italy sees Central Asia as a promising region for investments in renewable energy, rare minerals and agro-industry.
During Tajani's visit to Astana last September, a joint declaration was signed committing Italy and Kazakhstan to promote economic and industrial cooperation in sectors such as decarbonisation, rare earth elements and new technologies. The agreement aims to accelerate the green and digital transition of both countries and strengthen bilateral relations, which is Italy's first international agreement of its kind.
