On Tuesday evening, up to 10% of customers were disconnected due to a sharp increase in electricity consumption.
Due to the significant cooling, Ukrainians began to use heaters, which increased the consumption of electricity. As a result, emergency shutdown schedules were introduced. This was announced on Tuesday, May 14, by the chairman of the board of NEC Ukrenergo, Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, on the air of the telethon.
He noted that Ukraine has lost a large amount of capacity at power plants and now there is not enough of it. Therefore, for a certain period of time, it is necessary to use blackouts for industry. That is why for a large number of household consumers, the lack of light could occur imperceptibly. But the shortage of electricity in the system has been felt for a long time.
"It can be compensated in several ways: commercial imports carried out by companies from Europe. When this is not enough, Ukrenergo can apply emergency aid from neighboring countries, when this is also not enough – we can limit the consumption of industrial consumers. for balancing, we are forced to involve not only industry in the restriction, but also the population," Kudrytskyi said.
However, on the evening of May 14, due to the cold weather, there was a sharp increase in electricity consumption.
"It happened around 9:00 p.m. and we had to take emergency measures to balance the system to keep the situation under control. Up to 10% of consumers (in all regions – ed.) are temporarily disconnected until the end of the day," he said.
Kudrytsky stated that currently there is not enough capacity of Ukrainian power plants to cover consumption, and imports are also not enough.
