Pavlo Durov received French citizenship in August 2021 – less than a year after he became a citizen of the United Arab Emirates.

French President Emmanuel Macron said that he "takes full responsibility" for granting citizenship to the businessman and founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov. This was reported by BFMTV on Thursday, August 29.

He noted that he considers it correct to grant citizenship to outstanding businessmen, athletes and artists from other countries.

Macron also told reporters that he was not going to meet with Pavel Durov during the Telegram founder's visit to Paris.

"I should not have seen Mr. Durov either last weekend or in the coming days. I did not know that he would come to Paris. French justice acts independently on this issue. And it is the judges and independent organizations that have carried out investigative actions that must ensure transparency," Macron emphasized.

Currently, Durov is under judicial supervision, he is forbidden to leave the territory of France and he has to pay a bail of 5 million euros. It is also reported that Durov must report to the police twice a week.
